Competence Network Catalysis ConNeCat

Competence Network Catalysis ConNeCat

The BMBF (German Federal Ministry for Education and Research) has started an initiative for the encouragement of innovation-oriented research in the field of catalysis in Germany. The Competence Network Catalysis ConNeCat was founded to close the gap between short term industrial R&D and basic research in universities and other research institutions. The BMBF supports ConNeCat in two ways: Firstly by financing an organizational framework: network costs including a secretariat, to improve dialogue and contact both between and within industry and non-industrial research facilities. Secondly by co-funding outstanding research projects.

NIOK

Netherlands Institute for Catalysis Research (NIOK)

NIOK, which stands for ‘Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek in de Katalyse’ (Netherlands Institute for Catalysis Research), is a virtual institute consisting of Dutch University Groups active in all areas of catalysis. It is a nationwide graduate school (‘Onderzoekschool’) which fosters the advancement of both higher education and research and stimulates collaboration between scientists of different disciplines and Universities. NIOK acts as the platform and sparring partner for national and international contacts on catalysis with academia, industry and government. It was established in 1991 by the major catalysis groups of seven Dutch Universities. Later, NIOK was recognised by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW) and it is supported by an industrial advisory board VIRAN which consists of members from Dutch and multinational industries involved in many aspects of catalytic processes.
An overview of NIOK's activities in the 2000-2005 period can be found in the NIOK report "Catalyzing catalysis education and research".

Utrecht University hosts the coordination with Prof.dr.ir. Bert Weckhuysen (Utrecht University) as the scientific director and Prof.dr. Dieter Vogt (Eindhoven University of Technology) as the chairman of the board. NIOK, VIRAN and ACTS have combined offices in The Hague. Dr. Dorine Keusters is NIOK secretary and coordinates the NIOK day-to-day business.

Organic Reactions Catalysis Society (ORCS)

Organic Reactions Catalysis Society (ORCS)

In the early 1960s, a group of scientists created a forum for the presentation and discussion of the use of catalysis as applied to organic synthesis. The first four conferences on “Catalytic Hydrogenation and Other Analogous Pressure Reactions” were held under the auspices of the New York Academy of Sciences. The Organic Reactions Catalysis Society (ORCS) was formally established at the 5th conference held in Boston in 1975. At the founding, the Executive Committee decreed that a biennial conference would be held in the spring of even numbered years. The 6th conference was then placed under the umbrella of the North American Catalysis Society. Since then, successful conferences have been held throughout the continental USA. The 22nd conference will be held in Richmond, VA, at The Jefferson Hotel, March 30-April 3, 2008.
